Rationale Music education majors at the University of Florida School of Music experience a comprehensive course of study that includes a balance of academic coursework and practical experience in public school classrooms. Courses are designed and sequenced in order to provide students with the basic skills and knowledge to enter the field of music education and teach successfully. The Florida Department of Education has developed 12 Accomplished Practices that must be demonstrated by all Florida teachers, including those entering the field from preservice music education programs. All education students in the state must develop beginning level expertise in each of these practices. In order to demonstrate the pre-professional levels of the Accomplished Practices, our students must acquire specific knowledge and experience across the music education program. Our courses provide this specific knowledge and experience, so that all music education students attain the pre-professional levels of the Accomplished Practices before graduation. In order to provide easily accessible evidence of each student's progress toward acquisition of the pre-professional levels of the Accomplished Practices, the music education faculty has instituted a web-based music teaching portfolio requirement for all undergraduate music education students. The portfolio development process permits students to collect and select specific illustrations from their undergraduate coursework and experiences that directly address the Accomplished Practices.Once they collect and select their illustrations, they reflect on their work and its signifiance to their development as teachers. Students also develop essential web design and maintenance skills while engaging in the type of reflective practice that is characteristic of excellent teachers. As a faculty we are also concerned that students develop the proper attitudes and professional skills that will help them to remain in music education. We believe that by developing a web-based music teaching portfolio, each student will focus upon developing her or his individual teaching excellence, build appropriate professional demeanor and behavior, and acquire the personal skills and confidence to stay in the profession.
