How to Upload and Download Files Using Fetch.

by Naglaa Ali, graduate student, College of Education

Fetch is a Macintosh program for transferring files. It uses the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and therefore allows a networked Macintosh to transfer files with any connected machine that supports FTP.

Connecting to Fetch

Putting a file (sending a file to a remote server via Fetch)

Getting a file (retrieving a file from a remote server via Fetch)

Putting folders and files (sending or retrieving multiple files)

Deleting a file

Connecting to Fetch
1. You must specifiy the host address, enter your User ID and Password and delete the word "pub" in the directory field. (See the example below).

3. Once you are connected, the current folder is displayed as the title of the pop-up menu above the file list. You can open a folder within the current folder by double-clicking the name in the file list. Navigate to your folder in the portfolios server.

Putting a File

Put a text file

1. To put (send) a file to your portfolio folder on the ep server, click the Put File button. You will then be prompted to select the file you wish to put (send).

2.You will then be prompted to provide a name for the file on the server. This dialog box also allows you to choose a file format from a pop-up menu.
3. Use text format; be sure to name your file with the .HTML extension, then simply click OK.
4. The file will be transferred to the server and you can watch its progress in the status panel on the right side of the Fetch window (see spot run). When the transfer is complete the name of the file you have put will appear in the file name list (see highlighted blah.htm).
To put a (sound, image, video, or animation) file

Follow steps 1 to 3, but instead of selecting text from the format pop-up menu select Raw Data.

Getting a File

1. To get (retrieve) a file from your portfolio folder on the ep server you may select its name and press either Return, Enter, or the Get File button.

2.You will be prompted for a name for this file; if you click Save the file will be saved to your computer or the storage device of your choice. In the example below, the file: filename.html will be saved to the Macintosh HD.

Putting folders and files

1.To put folders and files into your portfolio folder on the ep server, go to Remote menu and select Put Folders and Files.

2. Select the files one by one, after every selection click the Add button.

3. If you want to add the entire folder, select the folder first and then click the Add All button and then the Done Button.

Deleting a file

1. If you want to delete the file from your account, select the file and choose Delete directory or file... from the Remote menu.
