Type of Assignment

Teaching Trumpet to Peer

Description of Assignment

I was asked to teach a non-brass player to play the trumpet with proper technique. First I demonstrated many of the proper techniques in order to play the trumpet such as posture, breathe, buzzing, and hand position. Then I had the student demonstrate all these newly learned techniques helping him out if I saw any problems. The initial goal being to have the student make a decent sound on the horn with proper technique. This assignment demonstrates the following criteria for Accomplished Practice #8:

Artistic Processes/Medium

1. Performing - instrumental, providing musical examples for student

2. Responding - listening, student listens as proper example is given

Rationale

This illustration clearly shows that I needed prior knowledge in order to teach this student the proper techniques of playing trumpet. It also shows that I am able to identify problems they were experiencing and help correct them.

Illustration

I brought the non-brass player into class where the goal was to have him make a decent sound on the trumpet using proper technique. I first began with posture and breath, demonstrating first and then having the student go. I next showed buzzing technique just with the mouthpiece and had the student demonstrate back. Next I showed the student the proper holding technique for the trumpet and again had him demonstrate this back to me. Finally with all this newly learned techniques I allowed the student to try and make a sound. He was successfully on his second try after I pointed out that he need to tighten his corners of his lips to achieve the correct embrasure.
