Outside ObservationsDescription of Assignment
In this class I was required to do seven observations at elementary, middle, and high schools. While I was done in Palm Beach County where I went and observed at an "at risk" elementary school in my area. Though I did not help teach the class, I observed how the teacher showed respect to each students differences and honored the musical heritage through culturally diverse songs that were taught. This meets the fulfills the criteria for Accomplished Practice #5 by:
- Honors the musical heritage and experiences of all students
- Maintains a classroom atmosphere that respects the differences among students
Artistic Processes/Medium
No artistic processes are addressed in this illustration.
Rationale
This examples shows that I am aware of the diversity that needs to be present and at the same time respected within the classroom setting. Though I just observed the class, I now have a better understanding of this concept and will apply it to my own teaching in the future.
Illustration
The class that I observed was very mixed ethnicity of students and the teacher respected every student while teaching about different cultures. She began the class by teaching the students an Irish Folk song. She explained the meaning and culture behind the song before having them learn the melody. After the students had learned this song she then taught them an African American Spiritual. She asked students what they knew about slavery and explained the meaning behind the song before teaching them the melody.
