"Six Little Ducks"
Description of Assignment
I began this activity by asking the students listen closely to the song, "Six Little Ducks", and told them I would be asking them some questions. After the end of the song I asked the children some critical thinking questions. These included "How many ducks were there?", "What different kinds of ducks were there?", and "What was different about the third verse?". I had the students raise their hands if they knew the correct answers. This was then followed by teaching the students the song and adding movements once the song was learned. When adding the movements I asked the I asked students if knew any other movements that could be in the song. The students then showed me some different ones which I had them incorporate in the song. These examples of creative and critical thinking accurately meet Accomplished Practice #4 in the following ways:
- Includes opportunities for critical and creative thinking in learning activities
- Involves students in making decisions about the interpretation of songs and musical works
Artistic Processes/Medium
Performing: Singing and Movement
Responding: Listening, Discussion
Rationale
This lesson plan focused on critical and creative thinking because of the questions asked throughout the lesson. It gives the students an opportunity for critical as well as creative thinking. The critical thinking was shown by having the students listen to the song first and then asking them specific questions on what they heard. The creative part of this lesson was having the students think of their own movements to the song and then incorporating them in the song.
