Lesson Plan: Kindergarten, First, and Second Grade
Description of Assignment
The elementary school that I was placed at for my internship was a title one school with a very diverse population. The students came from all different types of cultural backgrounds. Keeping all this in mind, I planned a curiculum that included songs from many different cultures. This one particular lesson has a song called "Obwisana" which is an African childrens song from Ghana. I gave the students a brief historical background of the piece and told them the meaning of the words. This meets the fulfills the criteria for Accomplished Practice #5 by:
- Honors the musical heritage and experiences of all students
- Maintains a classroom atmosphere that respects the differences among students
- Teaches classes that include appropriate music from a variety of cultural backgrounds

Rationale
This examples shows that I am aware of the diversity that needs to be present and at the same time respected within the classroom setting. I show with my lesson plan that I include music from a different cultural backgrounds.
