Star Spangled Banner word meaning activity
Description of Assignment
The purpose of this assignment was for the students to really understand the meaning of this country's national anthem through history and clarifying meaning of words in the text .I gave students the words to the song without giving them any information and asked them to circle any words that they may not understand. Before we went over the words I asked the students critical thinking questions about the text like "Can anyone identify this text for me?", "Who wrote this piece?", and "What historical event was happening during this composition?". Also, when I went over any words that they weren't sure of the meaning of, I first asked them what they thought the meaning to be. This fulfills the criteria in the Accomplished Practice 2 by:
- Includes opportunities for critical and creative thinking in learning activities
- Involves students in making decisions about the interpretation of songs and musical works
Artistic Processes/Medium
Responding: Listening, Discussion
Rationale
These teachings included critical and creative thinking because of the questions asked throughout the lesson. It also involved the students on making decisions about the interpretation of the song and really engaged the students mind.
