Description of Assignment
Prior to warm-ups and teaching the piece, I first asked the students what knowledge they had of African American Spirituals. After hearing their answers I added on by telling them a brief history as well as giving them information about the piece "Keep your lamps". We soon went on to learn the piece over the next three visits. This meets the fulfills the criteria for Accomplished Practice #5 by:
- Honors the musical heritage and experiences of all students
- Maintains a classroom atmosphere that respects the differences among students
- Teaches classes that include appropriate music from a variety of cultural backgrounds

Rationale
This example shows that I am aware of the diversity that needs to be present and at the same time respected within the classroom setting. By teaching the students music from a variety of cultural backgrounds.
