Teaching Eastside High School Chamber Singers
Lesson #1 of "Keep your Lamps"
Description of Assignment
In this lesson I was teaching the Eastside Chamber Singers the song "Keep your lamps" by Andre Thomas. After they had accomplished the task of learning the notes on the first page I first told them what I wanted phrasing wise and musically from the piece and then showed them an example, by singing the soprano line with the musical style I was just describing. Then as I had them portrayed the musical style in my conducting pattern as well. This fulfills the criteria of Accomplished Practice #11 by:
- Models appropriate behavior as teacher and musician
- Considers instruction in music as part of the larger educational effort of the school
- Uses specific directions at appropriate times
- Serves as a guide to students developing musical understandings and skills
Artistic Processes/Medium
Performance: Singing
Responding: Listening example and imitating example
Rationale
This activity shows that I was a great model for the students and I helped guide them appropriately through their activity. With the use of specific directions and examples at the appropriate times I was able to have students accomplish this lesson effectively.
